Feeling Green: On Earth Day, local environmentalists celebrate a successful year
By Katie Curley
Staff Writer
NEWBURYPORT — After a year's worth of green initiatives citywide, local environmentalists say there is reason to celebrate Earth Day today.
"This year has been awesome; everything is catching on," said Liss Campbell of Seacoast Energy and Environmental Design Coalition, an all-volunteer group that has taken a lead role in the greening of Newburyport. “Trade Secrets” column
Architect Stephen C. Watt of Amesbury, Massachusetts, created some edgy “green” twists on a new studio for his client, graphic designer Liss Campbell of Yellowdog Design in nearby Newburyport. Attached to a 1939 Cape-style house, the Yellowdog studio has traditional clapboard on the outside, as a sort of camouflage, but everything else is up-to-the-minute and eco-friendly, including the insulated concrete forms made of expanded polystyrene derived from recycled metals and plastics. The desks come from “upcycled” steel grates and glass. What’s that? Upcycle is a new term for -and new twist on- the venerable Shabby Chic tradition: it’s the process of taking industrial junk and, instead of breaking it down, somehow improving on it, even making it beautiful.
